Will an International Baccalaureate Diploma Help My Child?
Learn About the International Baccalaureate Diploma
With the increasing necessity of performing well in secondary school to increase the chances of admission into the finest colleges and universities, many parents are searching for any advantage in their child’s secondary education they can find.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma can offer a well-earned preference in gaining admission to the world’s finest and most competitive colleges and universities. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Program (DP) was first established to offer students a way forward towards a higher education through a balanced secondary education, regardless of their geographic location and mobility. The program also promoted international understanding, which appeals to the parents of children studying in many countries worldwide.
Birth of the IB Diploma Program
The International Baccalaureate® Diploma program was established by international educators in Geneva, Switzerland, in the 1960s. It was designed to offer 16- to 19-year-old secondary students in 140 countries a two-year educational program that specifically provided the education and classes required to qualify for acceptance into the world’s leading higher education institutions.
Specialization
The IB diploma program also offers students the opportunity to specialize in studying three subjects at a higher or college level while furthering their intellectual development in six other secondary education-level subjects at the Standard Level.
Students must choose subjects from six subject groups to satisfy the program requirements and qualify for the IB diploma. These groups include a choice of two language study courses, and a subject from Creativity, Activity and Service, plus the IB Diploma’s Core, Extended Essay, and Theory of Knowledge courses.
Different Paths
Students can also choose different pathways within the IB diploma program. For instance, some students decide to focus on the Personal Choice Diploma, which can include several IB Diploma courses. Upon completion of the courses, the students receive individual IB certificates in addition to their IB Diploma.
Benefits of the IB Diploma Program
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Program (DP) has won recognition from the world’s leading universities, and students applying for admission into one of these institutions have a much higher chance of acceptance if they include their IB diploma with their application.
Evidence also suggests that higher numbers of DP students go on to attend higher education and university-level study than non-DP students. DP students develop critical skills in thinking, reasoning, research, and writing while in secondary school, which gives them a competitive edge when they enter university programs.
