Red Rocks, CO: Season Opens, Concerts Begin, and the Geology Is Still Ancient

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Red Rocks Amphitheatre sits at 6,450 feet above sea level in Morrison, Colorado, flanked by two sandstone monoliths that are 290 to 300 million years old and have never once asked for a ticket. The 2025 season runs from March through October with over 150 events. The only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheatre in the world remains, predictably, very good at hosting concerts.

The sandstone formations belong to the Fountain Formation, tilted at 30 degrees during the Laramide Orogeny roughly 65 to 80 million years ago — the same tectonic event that raised the Rocky Mountains. Iron oxidation during burial created the red coloring. Underneath sits Precambrian basement rock dated at 1.7 billion years, separated from the Fountain Formation by a 1.2-billion-year gap in the geological record called the Great Unconformity. Jurassic-era dinosaur tracks are visible in the surrounding park.

2025 Season Highlights

The season opened March 8 with Icelantic’s Winter on the Rocks. Key shows include:

  • Sting plays a three-night run, which is the number of nights it takes to satisfy demand at a 9,500-seat venue.
  • Widespread Panic returns for its annual June three-night residency with the reliability of a geological formation.
  • Brandi Carlile performs three consecutive September nights because one was not going to cover it.
  • The Beach Boys play with the Colorado Symphony, combining California harmonies with live orchestration at altitude.
  • Skrillex delivers a five-hour set in May for those who find standard concert lengths insufficient.

Pollstar voted Red Rocks Best Outdoor Venue eleven times, then renamed the award after the venue and removed it from competition. In 2021, it became the highest-attended concert venue of any size in the world, with 996,570 people in a single year.

Beyond the Stage

The 738-acre park is open year-round:

  • Trading Post Trail is a 1.4-mile easy loop through the rock formations, suitable for all fitness levels.
  • Red Rocks Trail extends 6 miles north into Matthews/Winters Park for a proper half-day outing.
  • Yoga on the Rocks runs Sunday mornings inside the amphitheatre through summer.
  • The Visitor Center houses geology exhibits and the Colorado Music Hall of Fame.
  • Dinosaur Ridge, adjacent to the park, has accessible Jurassic fossil tracks.

Getting There

Red Rocks is at 18300 W Alameda Pkwy, Morrison, CO 80465. The drive from central Denver takes 25 to 35 minutes, and longer on concert nights when traffic on US-285 backs up before showtime. Parking opens two hours before events and fills fast. For visitors who prefer to skip the parking situation entirely, car service Denver to Red Rocks handles routing, drop-off, and post-show pickup so the only task left is watching whatever is happening on that stage. Rideshare pickup after events is at the Jurassic Lot near Entrance 2.

Practical Notes

  • Bring a jacket: temperatures drop sharply after sunset at 6,450 feet, even in July.
  • Glass containers are prohibited throughout the park and venue.
  • Altitude accelerates dehydration faster than most visitors arriving from sea level expect.
  • Concert tickets for major shows sell out within minutes of going on sale.
  • The Ship Rock Grille at the Visitor Center serves food before events with direct views of the formations.
